The Places We Shop

"The Places We Shop" is an exhibit of 18 paintings that visually compares national chain stores with local independent sellers. All the paintings were created on location, en plein air, with no further adjustments made to them. A local organic farm stand, Greenmeadows, is compared to a painting of BJ's; a fair trade local coffee shop, Zumis, is compares with Starbucks. Journal entries accompany each piece. Here is an excerpt from Starbucks:

"...When I got there, I was quite tired. I felt a bit off, but figured a cup of coffee would help. And though I wasn't planning to ask permission, I had a feeling that if Starbucks wasn't really busy, no one would give me a hard time for painting there. And that was the case. I painted quietly for two hours... Samples of food and coffee were brought around, and no one interrupted me. I am not sure if that is a positive or a negative feature. Since this exhibit is to reveal the experience of each store, it is what it is..."
