What is the difference between illustration and fine art? I believe it is in the purpose of the painting, not in the medium, style or mood.

An illustration has an obligation to communicate a particular concept or message to the viewer. Fine art can do this too, but is under no obligation to do so. However, commissioned portraits can be fine art and still have an obligation to please the patron.

For this reason non-commissioned, fine art painting is my escape from the constraints of commercial design and illustration. I can paint what I wish, how I wish, and exhibit the work as it is. I cherish the freedom in this process.
