URBANSCAPES IN OIL

Barbara is fascinated by Edward Hopper. After seeing an exhibition on his work at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, she became intrigued by the solemn, haunting urbanscapes that he so deftly painted. The evening painting of a pharmacy's exterior was influential in her decision to paint the “Places We Shop” series. After moving to New York, Barbara happily realized that she lives only blocks from the Whitney Museum of American Art, which contains many of Hopper's works. Seeing “Early Sunday Morning” was an amazing experience, as was spotting his Truro gas station painting in the MOMA. This summer she unexpectedly stumbled across one of her favorite pieces, “The Automat.” While visiting a friend in Des Moines, Iowa, the two decided to explore the Des Moines Art Center, just blocks away. Though not a large museum, the collection includes many impressive pieces, such as this beloved Hopper.
